The Wildlife Rescue Team from Nature Trust Malta were alerted early this morning that a turtle was nesting at Hondoq ir-Rummien in Gozo.
Officials from the Environment & Resources Authority and Nature Trust Malta went on site and found the turtle still trying to attempt to nest.
NTM said that unfortunately all her attempts were unsuccessful. Therefore they are expecting this female to come again to nest in the coming nights.
When she gave up on her attempts and was making her way back to the sea, the turtle was microchipped in order to help increase data in the Mediterranean and also to help local officials recognise her on any repeat encounters.
The Wildlife Rescue Team urged the public to call them on 9999 9505 or to call ERA on call in case they see a turtle nesting on the beach.
They advised to please “give the turtle space and keep silent so as not to disturb her. Do not use flash, do not touch the turtle, and give her at least 5-10m of space.”
The Team thanked the ERA for their continued support during turtle nesting season.
On Tuesday, the first turtle nest of the year was discovered at Ramla Bay in Gozo.
The area will be monitored 24/7 for the coming 2 months, by volunteers for Nature Trust in collaboration with ERA.
Anyone wishing to become a volunteer at Ramla should please send an email on turtle.ramla@gmail.com
Patrols on other beaches will still continue as nesting season is not yet over, NTM said.
