The €300,000 renovation works of the Cathedral Museum at the Citadel in Victoria, Gozo, have been inaugurated,
The inauguration was carried out by the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett, and the Vicar General Mons. Tarcisju Camilleri.
The works, which were financed by European funds, consisted of a complete renovation of the museum building as well as the improvement in accessibility for people with mobility difficulties, both in terms of external access at the entrance of the museum as well as internal changes, such as the installation of a lift accessible from all floors of the museum.
The project also included mechanical and electrical, finishes, and other ancillary works such as electrical systems, plumbing and ventilation systems. In addition, audiovisual equipment has been installed to enhance the experience of cultural and religious tourism.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said that investing in the local heritage is the best way to ensure that the treasures of our country are preserved and protected, but at the same time they are enjoyed by the public and the tourists who like to visit our country.
“Through the KURA Association (within the Gozo Diocese), a number of interventions are being carried out with the aim of improving the cultural portfolio offered to tourists visiting Gozo. These include the restoration of church structures and church paintings located in seven different locations, the restoration of two Church organs, the renovation of the Cathedral Museum in Victoria, and the strengthening of the cultural arts centre of the Don Bosco Oratory, in the same city,” said Minister Camilleri.
Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett said that with an investment of €2.3 million, conservation, restoration and renovation work has been carried out on 16 projects located in 11 localities in Gozo including in Victoria, Xaghra, Gharb, Ghasri and Sannat.
The Parliamentary Secretary said that €1.7 million of this investment are with European funds from the European Fund for Regional Development. “Gozo has benefited from European funds and will continue to benefit from the new programme so that more companies continue to invest and more job and tourism opportunities are created,” he concluded.
The leader of this project Noel Formosa spoke about the importance of this investment and how the museum will serve as another attraction in the Citadel.
It’s a pleasure to read that Cultural Investments have been made and achieved in Gozo at long last.
I remember when my Brother in Law the late Joe Camilleri asked me to acquire permission from the Gozo Cathedral for Profs Wettinger to examine the Cathedral Historical Church Files. This was agreed too with the condition that these files will be categorized one after the other.
