Willie Apap – Colour and Light, is a retrospective exhibition opening soon at Il-Hagar Museum in Gozo, and which is thought to be the largest ever presentation of his works.

This “landmark” temporary exhibition of seventy works will showcase his genius and versatility: oils and inks of portraits, landscapes and still-lifes, dancers, human figures, sacred and ethnic works.

Willie Apap (1918-1970), who lived and worked for most of his adult life in Italy, was one of Malta’s leading exponents of 20th-century art.

The exhibition, accompanied by a lavish 100-page GEMS # 20, is curated by Maria Cassar. This graduate in Art History from the University of Malta carried out extensive research on Apap leading to new discoveries, a number of which are being exhibited for the first time here.

Willie Apap – Colour and Light, will have its official opening next Saturday, the 30th of July, by Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri.

This exceptional exhibition will run until the 10th of October. Il-Hagar said that it continues with its policy of not charging an entrance fee, and instead relies on donations.

The management said that it gratefully acknowledges support from the Malta Tourism Authority and the Gozo Ministry with its Cultural Directorate.

The museum is located in St George’s Square, Victoria. Normal opening hours are 9am to 5pm, seven days a week.

In preparation Il-Hagar said that it will unavoidably remain closed next Tuesday and Wednesday, the 26th and 27th of July.
