The Project “Protected Marine Areas and Artificial Fishing” pilot committee have been in Ustica to promote testing of innovative systems and services aimed at conserving marine and land biodiversity.
The third steering committee of the project “AMPPA – Protected Marine Areas and Artificial Fishing” has taken place between Ustica and Palermo. Integrated management through environmental awareness and education,” financed under the INTERREG V-A Italy-Malta Programme.
All representatives of the partnership were present, including directors and operators of the Protected Marine Areas of Ustica and Egadi, a delegation from the Regional Department of Mediterranean Fisheries, the mayors of Ustica, Gharb and Ghajnsielem, experts and project technicians.
During the three days of work, which took place from 1st to 3rd September, the participants discussed the progress of the project actions and the start of experimentation on small fishing gear.
In particular, a particular modification was established on a traditional net, capable of reducing the impact on ancillary species, thereby improving the selectivity of the catch.
The AMPPA project is a measure financed under the INTERREG V-A Italy-Malta Programme with priority axis: III environmental protections and promotion of efficient use of resources); specific objective: 3.1 (Contributing to stop the loss terrestrial and marine biodiversity in the area by maintaining and restoring ecosystems and protected areas).
Lead Partner: Municipality of Favignana – Managing body of the “Egadi Islands” Marine Protected Area; partners: Regional Department of Mediterranean Fisheries; Municipality of Ustica – Managing Body of Ustica Island Protected Marine Area; Gharb Local Council and Ghajnsielem Local Council.
