Just before 8am on Wednesday, a member of the public reported to Gozo SPCA that there was a dog crying in a skip in Marsalforn. The Centre Manager, Betty Berry, immediately responded with the Gozo SPCA funded twenty four hour animal ambulance and requested the local Police to also be in attendance. On arrival with the Police, Betty Berry found a dog feed sack inside the skip in which there appeared to be a dog in severe pain.
On removal from the skip, to their horror they discovered that the dog was on top of another dog inside the same sack. Examination of the second dog revealed it to be dead, but the death was recent since rigor mortis had not set in. The dog that was alive was in severe pain throwing its head back in agony, screaming and fitting. After covering its head to calm the dog, it was rushed to the Vet.
The Vet diagnosed that the dog had been poisoned and was in the final throes of dying an agonising death, sadly the only option was to put it peacefully to sleep. Both dogs were small to medium in size, of terrier cross breed and looked to have been in quite good health prior to being poisoned.
Whilst making a report at the Victoria Police Station, Gozo SPCA was informed that an injured kitten had been handed in by a tourist, who had picked it up nearby; they thought it had been hit by a car. In fact it had a severe eye infection, which could result in the loss of one eye. Other than that the kitten, which is very tame, seems in good health and is eating well and is now under veterinary care at the Gozo SPCA shelter. This cruel abandonment may well have a very happy ending since the Police would like to have the kitten as a Station cat when it has fully recovered from its treatment.
Gozo SPCA personnel have been very shaken and deeply upset by these two cruel events following so closely on the dog found in a Cave last week. A spokesperson commented that from the recent vigorous discussions in the press there had been a lot of hurtful and ill informed criticism of the Gozo SPCA but the Society had also received many more messages of support. However they were very heartened to learn that there are a number of people in Gozo and Malta who are willing to re-home injured and sick dogs on a permanent basis.
Gozo SPCA frequently pick up such dogs and would be very grateful if these people would leave their contact details either by calling the Centre on 21553769 or by email at info@spca-gozo.org and then something really positive will come from this very sad episode.
Gozo SPCA are vigorously pursuing the owner of the two dogs and urge the public to report any information that they may have either to the Society, or the Police, or the Animal Welfare Unit in Malta on 25905302.
Gozo SPCA

O MY GOD – will this ever stop????
You’d think that, in an island the size of Gozo – where everybody knows everybody else’s business – the person responsible would be caught – and, hopefully, punished.Speak up if you know who did it! CRUELTY TO ANIMALS IS A CRIME, AND THESE SO CALLED HUMANS ARE CRIMINALS!
This is horrible! Cruelty to animals is a crime and I hope the person responsible would be caught.
THE Spca are still in the fray..
Personally I know how dedicated the SPCA members are .They work very hard to do the best they can.
I talked to Betty Berry not long ago when she was teaching school children about dogs .
I also know Roger F and Roger W,and Dave and know how dedicated they are in helping the SPCA .There are so many nice stories that I can say that it is not possible to write them all here .
Betty and all the rest of you, we gozitans are gratefull for your dedication .
Keep up the good work we are all behind you .
As usual Gozo animal cruelty is at the top of the list, its usually Malta but animal cruelty in Gozo leads.
There must be some uncivilized people roaming the streets of Gozo by all account, this news reached us as far away as New Zealand and Australia.
The Gozo SPCA must have their hands full in Gozo.
We are British living in the Gharb area of Gozo, this is our 3rd year and we love it here, the majority of the Gozitans are really nice people, but there seems to be a many that still live by the old CODE of the three monkeys.:- WE SEE NOTHING*WE HEAR NOTHING*AND FINALLY SAY NOTHING* please folks do away with that old wife’s tale and be a man and speak up and report the culprits, its not projecting a good image on your lovely island and news travesls fast we all know that, I even had this report sent to me from the UK.
It’s utterly impossible for me to comprehend the sick mind of the “human being” who did this. Words really fail me to express just how angry I am!
– A plea to all who read this: Please give a helping hand, in which ever way you can, to the SPCA Gozo. Whether it is some of your time, a donation of cash or even pet food… the centre is run by volunteers, who are doing sterling work for little more than insults from ignorant people, and they need all the help they can get!
I hope everybody appreciates how dedicated the staff at the Gozo SPCA are. They work endless hours voluntarily during the week and at weekends, sacrificing their private time. Unfortunately this sheer hard work and dedication is not being appreciated by the general public. It’s not the first time, that you see letters sent by ungrateful, pompous, uninformed people who criticise the SPCA and its staff. I really ask these people who critise SPCA in order to volunteer themselves for this hard work, as they are so knowledgeable about everything.
Keep it up SPCA, our lovely island needs you! Don’t let anyone spoil your enthusiasm and dedication!
The Gozo SPCA chose to do the job voluntarily – and its their duty to do it well . The public have a right to critisize where necessary. No 0ne ought to be “crucified” for this.
Is this catholic MALTA ?
@Peter – No this time at least it is catholic GOZO.
Mr.Scicluna Gozo is part of Malta
i am shattered by that story, i mean i know animal cruelty wasd at a high, but that sicko has gone way beyond the valley of sad city, and i hope he or she pays for it.
i hate cruelty to all animals, and am very passionate about it, i hope u guys agree with me. Some day i will fight for what is deserved in animals, what have they done to us??
NOTHING!! thats what, most animals are loyal and kind, but some that are treated bad are seen as a threat, well im here to tell you that their not they are just like you or me, fighting to survive.
i almost cry at the site of animal cruelty and i feel for the animals that pay the ultimate price, death, for doing nothing wrong.
These people should be stopped 1= Very heavy fine 2= Not allowed to keep animals 3= All dogs ,cat, other animals should be registered by law and not allowed to import animals from abroad. THIS IS CRUELTY AND IF IT WASN’T FOR BETTY DOING HER JOB WHO ELSE IS GOING TO TAKE IT ON. IF THE SPCA CLOSES IT WILL GET WORSE, THE LAW AND GOVERNMENT SHOULD STEP IN AND STOP THIS CRUELTY. THIS WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE UK SO COME ON PEOPLE DO SOMETHING
ITS so funny that so called humans are thinking that they are helping the animals but really they are making the situation worse. I love animals and ill do anything i mean anything to make sure that the animals get the attention that they need. Please try to stop animal cruelty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The UK is at the very top of the league when it comes to animal cruelty. Dog fighting, Badger Baiting etc. We abandon more dogs in the month after Christmas than any other European Country.
We promote the barbaric savagery of Halal killing methods to appease an ancient desert culture.
Let’s not be too critical of others…those who live in greenhouses and throw stones etc etc
What kind of twisted minds do these things to animals?! How would ya like it if someone did that to you?! Not very much, I suppose! Why can’t we all just live in a world where everybody and everything loves each other, and supplies are abundant to support this life?
I came across this while doing an aticle for an MBA course. I have an adopted poodle which was in terrible shape when I got him from the Los Angeles Animal shelter, now he hope around and chases dogs 10 times his weght, after two years of having him.
People that do these cruel things make me sick and even make me cry. I donate to the aspca every month. It is only a small ammount, but I hope it makes a small difference. Whether it is your time or money that you donate, if enough people do this, we can overcome animal cruelty/abuse.
As far as these people go, they belong in a solitary confinement prison cell as far as I think… sick sick people.
hi im a young student living in the United States and i think that we should do our part all around the world to help stop animal cruelty becasue like someone said on here how would you fell if someone did this to u i dont think that u will like it eaither so why do it to animales? Well done to Gozo SPCA and keep the good work!!! Shame on those people who can maltreat animals in such a way! Hope they get caught. Unless big fines start to be given these bastards will never learn how to be kind to animals. I was a volunteer at the SPCA and know that these volunteers, almost all foreigners go far beyond their limit to help animals, most of which were abused and dumped on the roads. One has to remember that these volunters are picking up other people’s problems due to irresponsible ownership! People that nowadays maltreat animals are a minority in our society but they reflect very badly on our beautiful islands. Once again well done the SPCA! Vet student Slovakia
The cats and dogs should never be treated like that if they do why do they need animals if they are going to be cruel.
That is sick and there are Vetrinarians who would help with that
We have cruelty in the UK but Malta takes first prize. sickening to say the least. these animals are like children they need looking after, they all rely on us for their welfare
