Melita have announced that statistics published in the Malta Communications Authority’s (MCA) annual report for 2008 show that Melita is the key driver behind market growth in the home entertainment and telecommunications sector in Malta and Gozo.
The MCA report confirms Melita as the preferred provider for television and broadband internet services. The MCA statistics have also confirmed the fast growth rate of Melita’s fixed telephony services and cites competitive prices and consumer-friendly offers as the main factor pushing prices down and usage up.
"We thank our customers for trusting Melita and for trusting us as their preferred home entertainment and communications provider," said Melita’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Stephen Wright.
Fixed line telephony
While in European markets fixed-line telephony continues to exhibit year on year decline, Malta experienced a steady growth in 2008. At the end of 2008, Melita had installed 55,000 fixed telephony lines in households and offices across the Maltese Islands. Over 10,000 new subscribers were registered in 2008. Melita registered an increase of 8% in market share when compared to end of December 2007.
As at the end of the period under review, over 6200 subscribers or 2.6% of total fixed-line subscribers opted to switch their fixed-line operator while keeping their existing telephone number.
During the same period, GO’s fixed lines continued to decrease sharply by more than 8%.
Mobile
The report notes that as at the end of 2008, Maltese mobile users were still being charged expensive mobile rates, prompting the European Commission to express its concern that Malta registers the highest mobile voice telephony prices in the European Union.
Melita Mobile was not yet in operation during the period under review.
Since its launch on February 1st 2009, Melita Mobile has promised and implemented the cheapest, simplest and better mobile service on the Islands, with call rates up to 30% cheaper.
From the outset, mobile call rates on Melita Mobile were by far closer to the EU average call rate and in some cases, even cheaper. Currently, Melita Mobile is offering the cheapest mobile call rate of just 10 cents per call for the entire duration of all calls to Melita Mobile and Melita fixed-line numbers.
Broadband Internet
The market review shows that Melita has retained its position as Malta’s leading broadband internet provider.
As at December 2008, Melita’s broadband cable internet products enjoyed a 52% market share with 52,000 families and businesses connected to Melita’s fast and reliable cable internet service.
95% of Melita’s broadband subscribers will now enjoy a new mind-blowing internet experience as Melita is upgrading all 2Mbps connections to 5Mbps for free, thus setting the minimum entry level speed to 5Mbps. The introduction of Melita’s 50Mbps super fast connection is another first for the Maltese Islands.
Television
Melita’s digital cable television is the preferred choice for almost 50,000 subscribers in the Maltese Islands while an almost equal amount is connected to the older analogue TV platform.
75% of the market is subscribed to Melita’s television packages.
