A statement issued earlier today by the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs said that the Government shows solidarity with Mr Ray Vella who is a ranger at the Foresta 2000 site, Mellieha. Mr Vella was this morning hit by a cartridge which was fired in his direction. The Government realises that this is not the first incident of this type against Mr Vella.

Minister George Pullicino was informed of the incident early this morning, he is currently traveling to attend a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Environment of the European Union. The President of Din l-Art Hewla, Martin Galea, together with the Ministry and Birdlife are partners in the management of the site of the Forest 2000 project which enjoys the support of the public.

The Government nevertheless remains committed to supporting this project.
