A presentation of Solar Energy Best Practices from Gozo as been delivered at the Final International Conference of the City Minded Project in Croatia.

Representatives of the Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) participated in the City Minded Project Final International Conference, organised in Pula, held recently in Croatia.

The conference with the theme “Pathways towards green transition of European urban areas” was hosted by the project lead partner IRENA and brought together the project partners, students and stakeholders.

MIEMA spoke about the use of solar energy in Gozo and presented best practices in relation to maximising self-consumption of energy generated through photovoltaic systems, such as the PV system at the Ministry for Gozo.The event served as an opportunity to showcase the results achieved through the implementation of a pilot energy community project carried out in the locality of San Lawrenz, where testing activities were carried out within 15 buildings.

MIEMA has been working on the concept of renewable energy communities since 2015 and launched two pilot studies in Gozo in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and the Local Council of San Lawrenz.

The agency is now promoting a renewable energy community model to enable residents that cannot invest directly in the installation of a photovoltaic system to buy “renewable energy shares” from larger centralised PV systems installed in their vicinity, such as public schools and government administration buildings.The City Minded project is funded under the Erasmus+ programme and aims to develop and test an innovative, creative, European-scaled learning environment called ‘city decarbonisation itinerant workshop’, where students, specialists and stakeholders can come together to address common challenges and define collaborative urban decarbonisation roadmaps.
