Over 50 garbage bags of illegally dumped waste have been collected in areas around Gozo in the first two clean-ups of the year by local NGO – Nadur Nadif.

These have been collected in just 2 hours on each clean-up, with 4 young volunteers.

Writing on Facebook, the NGO said, “what a way to start the year, but the clean-ups are just a fix to the issue of illegal dumping and not the solution.”

It added that, “this year we will push even harder in order to find a concrete solution to this mess. As the main reason to start this group, was all due to our disgust of such practices.”

Nadur Nadif stated that it had collected 1,526 garbage bags since October 2020 to December 2022. There were 738 in 2022 alone.

The group said that, “it’s quite impressive to think that if each garbage bag we collected (with an average diameter of around 0.5 – 0.7m) had to be placed one top of the other, it would approximately reach the same height as the tallest building in the world.”

Nadur Nadif concluded by saying that “obviously, such an achievement would have been impossible if it weren’t for our volunteers who are determined to safeguard the environment around us from a sea of garbage.”
