Only two police stations out of fifteen are open on a regular basis – 24-hours a day – on Gozo, Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality Byron Camilleri, has said.

The Minister was replying to a Parliamentary Question by Opposition MP Chris Said, who asked the Minister how many Police stations there are in Gozo and where they are located.

Dr Said also asked for information on the operation of each of these stations during the last six months, such as on average – how many hours a week the station was open to the public and was manned by police officers.

Minister Camilleri advised that he had been informed that there are currently fifteen police stations in Gozo, details of which are shown below.

“The main police stations that are open 24-hours a day are those of Victoria and Mgarr, while that of Marsalforn is opened regularly when the demand allows, and this police station is also used continuously by the Community Police,” the Minister said.

In his reply, Minister Camilleri also said that Xlendi police station is open throughout the summer months, while the Marina police office at Mgarr opens every day from seven in the morning to half past six in the evening. The Xaghra station is currently under construction.

“Other stations are opened according to the demands of the service and because of this the details about the opening hours are not available,” he said.

Minister Camilleri pointed out in his reply that, “every village in Gozo is covered by a regular patrol carried out by officers from the District Mobile Squad as well as those from the Community Police.”

He concluded that, “this is apart from the fact that with many of these police stations there is an electronic system installed through which the public can communicate with the Police Headquarters 24-hours a day.”

The Xewkija Local Council, writing on Facebook in the past days, said that over recent weeks it has “been more than concerned by a number of thefts reported in our locality. The Council understood the fear that had built among our residents.”

The Council wrote that the Gozo District Police had “confirmed that both patrols by Victoria Police Station and community police have increased, thus further increasing surveillance.”

The Xewkija Local Council stressed that it will “continue to make pressure to see that the village Police Station is opened again.”

The fifteen police stations on Gozo with details provided by the Minister are:

1. Victoria Police Station, Republic Street, Victoria

2. Mgarr Police Station – N.B. Shore Road, Mgarr – Gozo

3. Xaghra Police Station – N.B 8th September Avenue, Xaghra (subject to construction work by the Council)

4. Nadur Police Station – 24, St. Pietru and St. Paul Square, Nadur

5. Marsalforn Police Station – 35, Triq Marina, Marsalforn

6. Xewkija Police Station – 85, Triq l’Indipendenza, Xewkija

7. Gharb Police Station – Civic Centre, Visitation Street, Gharb (in the hands of the Council – it can be used when necessary)

8. Sannat Police Station – N.B Triq Sannat, Sannat

9. Xlendi Police Station – N.B Triq Sant’Indrija, Xlendi

10. Kercem Police Station – Sarg Street, Kercem (in the hands of the Council – it can be used when necessary)

11. Ghajnsielem Police Station – 40, Triq Simirat, Ghajnsielem

12. Qala Police Station – Local Council Bldg., St. Joseph Street, Qala

13. San Lawrenz Police Station – San Lawrenz Square, San Lawrenz

14. Zebbug Police Station – Church Street, Zebbug
