A formative meeting for parents of adolescents and young adults was held at the Dar Manresa hall in Victoria, focusing on the theme “The Use of Alcohol and Substances.”
The speakers were Dr. Chantelle Azzopardi, a psychiatrist at the Gozo General Hospital, and Dr. Noel Xerri, Executive Officer of the Oasi Foundation.
Dr. Xerri explained that while not everyone who uses substances becomes dependent, the risk is significant. He illustrated how such use provides an immediate sense of pleasure – a sensation that diminishes over time, while the craving for the substance intensifies. Dependency can develop over the course of several years.
He also noted an increase in substance abuse cases in Gozo, involving substances such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin. Among adolescents, such use may stem from a desire to feel part of a group.
He emphasised the importance of a collective effort to shift attitudes toward drugs, much like the shift that occurred regarding smoking. Furthermore, he noted that young people should not base their expectations of happiness and satisfaction on a luxurious or extravagant lifestyle.
Dr Azzopardi stressed the importance of parents’ presence in their children’s lives, while encouraging them to develop their skills and take responsibility for their actions. If they discover that their children are using drugs, parents should offer help and support without passing judgement or panicking excessively.
The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which participants expressed their concerns regarding the lack of direct action by the authorities.
