The next in a series of talks being held at Il-Hagar Museum in Gozo will be – Illuminating Caravaggio, when Lighting Consultant Rita Curmi will be discussing the new scheme used for Saint John’s Oratory.

Ms Curmi, after studying at Malta University and MCAST, continued for her Master of Arts in Lighting Design under Malcolm Innes at Edinburgh Napier University. Her thesis treated a state-of-the-art lighting system for the Caravaggio masterpiece of the Baptist’s Beheading.

Following its completion, she has been working on multiple projects in various sectors. Believing that light is integral to all design elements, her goal is to raise awareness of the importance of incorporating lighting design in any project.

After investigating innovative lighting techniques within museum and gallery settings to implement an optimised lighting solution for the particular location of the Oratory of the St John’s Co Cathedral in Valletta, Rita Curmi chose the best lighting and control system.

Tunable LED sources were used to give a new dimension to the Caravaggio masterpiece, further accentuating the drama unfolding right in front of the visitor.

All these aspects were also most suitable for the Mattia Preti works and abundant Baroque features adorning the walls of the Oratory.
