The Ministry for Gozo coordinated emergency repair work to a main sewer which had been damaged last night in the Xlendi road. The main sewer was accidently struck whilst work was being carried out yesterday during the reconstruction of the Xlendi road.

Workers from the various departments within the Gozo Ministry as well as the Department of Sanitation, Water Services Corportation, Enemalta and the Civil Protection Department Gozo, carried out cleaning work and started on the urgent repairs of the main sewer. Every effort was made to halt the flow of the leaking water from flowing down to Xlendi Bay, The Ministry said.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, visited the site during the repair operation, which went on until late evening, she expressed her appreciation for the work which had been quickly coordinated in order to avoid both damage and unnecessary inconvenience to residents and local tourist establishments.

The Ministry said that tests have been carried to determine if the waters of the bay are free from contamination. As the results of such tests can take some time, the Ministry has recommended that people should refrain from swimming in the inner bay until further notice.
