To mark Social Work Day, today the 21st of March, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses have highlighted the importance of this profession in society.

The MUMN said that social workers aim to “enhance human well-being in the context of adversity. They work incessantly with individuals and families who are in distress in order to help them improve their lives.”

These include among others those who are suffering from abuse and violence, poverty, mental health problems, addictions, complex family relationships and loneliness, the union said.

It added that people from all walks of life who are experiencing a dark period in their life, can benefit from social work interventions, that give them hope and empower them to work through their challenges.

In today’s world of rapid population growth and diversity, social problems are “manifold,” the union said. This makes Social Work all the more necessary for it confronts social ills and promotes social justice.

This year’s Social Work Day is promoting the theme ‘Respecting diversity through joint social action’ acknowledging the Social Workers’ roles in working with communities to facilitate healthy transformations.

Social work is one solution to address the connection between personal troubles and public disarray, the union said.

It stressed that “it is a profession that entails commitment, resilience and courage in a culture of greed. Its propensity for growth requires investment on a national level.”

“Failure to act will tarnish the beauty of this profession and burns out our social workers who work tirelessly every day for the well-being of our society,” it said.

The MUMN concluded by appealing to the Government to enter into discussions to achieve better working conditions for all the social workers working in the public sector. “This profession is the jewel in the crown among the health care professionals.”
