The Qala Local Council has strongly condemned the way that works have already started on a large project in Ta Kassja, Qala, before tomorrow’s decision on the appeal is given by the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal.

“It is clear that the works are going on before any decision, so that any decision will be rendered meaningless,” said a Council spokesperson.

The Qala Local Council has filed two appeals regarding this site, citing that the developer files applications in a “piecemeal fashion” to make life more difficult for the Council.

It noted that the Tribunal did not suspend the works during the appeal. “Since then nearly 2 years have passed and the developer has obviously taken advantage of the Tribunal’s decision to start works. Our right to appeal is being rendered ineffective,” the Council spokesperson said.

The Council argued that “the building is not according to plans and policies, carob trees have been uprooted, The balconies will project so far into the street that they will obstruct large vehicles such as waste disposal trucks.”

“The Planning Authority does not answer our queries about the site’s building alignment. The Tribunal delays its decision,” the Council said.

It concluded by saying that “the developer makes hay while the sun shines. And the locality of Qala suffers.”
