The document of the National Strategic Vision for Local Government 2023-2030 has been launched following a broad consultation process.

The Government said that the aim of this document is to lead to a “renewal in the field of local government, with a strategic vision that offers a way forward based on higher levels of good governance, residing at the core of the work of the local councils and an environment that improves the quality of life of the residents. A vision that complements that of the Government in the field of local government.”

It was explained that the Strategic Vision is designed on five main themes that reflect a holistic vision that incorporates and encourages more inclusive, sustainable and creative communities for residents to live, work and integrate in a healthier and cleaner environment.

These are: Good and Effective Governance; Regional Resource for Local Councils; Localities with a Cleaner Environment; Local Councils Close to the People; Digital Priority in Local Government.

It was launched by Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli and Minister for Local Government Owen Bonnici.

A programmed commemorating 30th anniversary since the establishment of the local councils in Malta and Gozo was also announced, which includes activities and initiatives from now until November.

This was announced by the Chairman of the Organising Committee Aaron Zahra who explained that the programme has in its centre those closest to the local government which are the regional presidents, the mayors, the councillors, the executive secretaries and all the local council workers.
