The Nationalist Party has said that it supports the residents of Tac-Cawla in Victoria and their concerns over the construction by the Government of another block of social housing in the “only open space left in the area.”

The PN in a joint statement, said that the residents want this project stopped and accessibility improved for the existing social residences.

“Improving accessibility for existing social residences is a policy that the Government is supposed to be adopting and which is repeatedly promised by the Government,” the PN said.

It added that these two requests were also submitted in the form of a petition to Prime Minister Robert Abela more than a week ago, but to date the Government has not yet commented.

The PN stated that Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri tried to say “in the most misleading way, that this is a project of `open space.’ Numbers were quoted that give the impression that the residential block took up a only a small amount of space.”

The PN argued that “the permit applied for by his own Ministry, PA/5522/18 contradicts all the numbers quoted yesterday, which clearly show that the children’s play areas, as well as the social and recreational areas which be narrowed and reduced to create an area for a residential block and its access.”

The Nationalist Party said that that this project is not aimed at open space, but will “suffocate” the last remaining space.

The PN said it was in favour of having social housing in an alternative site, with all the surrounding space embellished and to remain open for the enjoyment of the residents without the addition of another residential block.

It insisted that the building of social housing and the creation of opens spaces are to separate and independent objectives.
