AFM anniversary musical concert marks Pope John Paul II’s visit to Gozo

The Armed Forces of Malta Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Captain Jonathan Borg, recently performed a concert at the Gozo Cathedral to mark the 33rd anniversary of the visit to Gozo of the Polish Pope Saint John Paul the Second.
The AFM Band, which was invited to Gozo by the JP2 Cultural Foundation, presented a concert of Sacred Music.
Among those present were the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Victoria Local Council as well as Mr Anton Tabone former Minister and former Speaker of the House, together with the Archpriest of the Cathedral Mons Dr Joseph Sultana.
The programme included among others; ‘Meditation – Lux Christi’ and later, by the young Gozitan composer Antoine Mercieca and heard for the first time his piece ‘La Campana Suona’ with the soloist l -Bdr Joseph Grech. Also for the first time ‘La Cittadella’ by Andrew M. Wilson was played with the participation of the soloist Bdr Jason F. Camilleri who is also the Bandmaster of Gharb Band.
The concert took place with the full collaboration of the Victoria Local Council so that this concert could be staged, as well as Joe Cordina and Associates.
The JP2 Foundation also expressed thanks also to the Cultural Heritage within the Ministry for Gozo for their help, as well as photographer Paul Scicluna and to Ronnie and Luke Bezzina who gave the public the chance to follow this cultural activity from home.
Entrance to the concert was free and a monetary collection took place. Part of the processes will go to Dar tal-Providenza. The JP2 Foundation would like to thank all those who contributed.
