Checkpoint Malta is an NGO dedicated to challenging stigma relating to HIV and other STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections), supporting people living with HIV and campaigning for improved sexual and other healthcare for those affected by HIV.

As part of its remit they have been organising once a month HIV testing sessions run by trained volunteers on Gozo and in Malta very successfully since September last year.

Testing is free, confidential and fast with results in 20 minutes. Everyone is welcome to come for testing regardless of sexual orientation, nationality or resident status and the service is offered in a non-judgemental and supportive environment.

They said that booking is recommended. but people can just drop in for a chat and further information between 4-6pm and then decide if they wish to get tested.

A spokesperson from Checkpoint Malta said, “most of the people coming for testing with Checkpoint Malta come because they want ‘peace of mind’ and unfortunately waiting times for non-symptomatic, routine testing appointments at GU Clinic at the moment are up to 6 months. That’s a long time for people to remain unsure about their HIV status.”

They added that “unfortunately, in 2021, Malta topped the list of HIV infections per capita in the European Union (data from ECDC European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control). If people are experiencing symptoms, of HIV or other STI’s they should immediately contact GU Clinic at Mater Dei or Gozo Sexual Health Clinic at Gozo General Hospital for an appointment and they will be seen.”

Checkpoint Malta said that they are “filling a need for routine testing and provision of support and sexual health education which the clinics are finding difficult due to lack of resources. We are also open in the late afternoon and evening which is more convenient for many people.”

Fast track referrals for follow up at GU Clinic, Gozo Sexual Health Clinic and counselling will be organised when necessary, if someone has a ‘reactive’ test for example.

They explained that “it is recommended that sexually active adults get tested every 6 months for HIV and other STI’s, particularly if they are engaging in the types of sex which carry a higher risk of transmission of infection. At Checkpoint Malta we are trying to ‘normalise’ testing which in itself helps to reduce the stigma which persists surrounding HIV and other STI’s and discourages people from getting tested.”

Checkpoint Malta added that “early detection of HIV infection is ideal as people can start effective treatment to protect their immune system and can live a full, healthy and long life. With treatment, people can reduce the amount of HIV in their body to an undetectable viral load, which also means that they cannot transmit the virus to their sexual partners. This is known as U=U, Undetectable = Untransmittable.”

This project is run by NGO Checkpoint Malta in collaboration with the GU Clinic, HIV Malta, Sexual Health Malta and The JAM Project.
