Tomorrow, Gozo will be commemorating the 104th anniversary of the events of Sette Giugno, during a ceremony in Xaghra to mark the 7th of June 1919 riots.

There will be a Mass at 6.30pm at the Basilica Church of the Virgin Mary for the souls of the victims, including Guzeppi Bajada from Xaghra. This will be the last Mass at the Basilica.

Following the Mass, there will be a walk with the participation of the Xaghra Scouts Group from the Basilica to the memorial of Guzeppi Bajada in Triq Bullara where the laying of wreaths will take place. This is the location of the original dwelling of Guzeppi Bajada, one of the victims who lost his life on that day.

On the 7th of June 1919, riots, precipitated by the economic state of Malta post-World War I, resulted in the death of four civilian protesters, including one from Xaghra, Gozo, following shootings by British servicemen.

On that fateful day the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island.

The commemorative activity on Wednesday is organised by the Directorate of Cultural Heritage at the Ministry for Gozo in collaboration with the Xaghra Local Council.
