Though “pausal forms” can be considered as the most peculiar feature of Gozitan dialects, probably not too many have researched them. However, attendees of the next lecture at Il-Hagar Museum in Victoria, will have the opportunity to hear about just this type of research.
This intriguing linguistic phenomenon was in fact investigated by Maria Lipnicka and Maciej Klimiuk, from the renowned Heidelberg University of Germany, in joint fieldwork research between 2014 and 2021.
Dialectological fieldwork in Semitic studies is a challenging undertaking, but Dr Lipnicka is now presenting the outcome of this project “Community-Oriented Dialectological Studies on Language Dynamics of the Island of Gozo” in a lecture, beginning with a brief introduction to methods of dialectological research.
“Speech is silver, silence is…” will be held on Saturday, the 24th of June at 11 am, another in the series of Saturday sessions organised for Il-Hagar’s tenth anniversary.
Admission is, as always at Il-Hagar, free of charge, but seat reservations are recommended to events@heartofgozo.org.mt.
Visitors can also view the spectacular Francesco Zahra exhibition.
