Joseph Borg and Michael Galea, President and Vice-President of INSULEUR and Jesmond Buttigieg, Manager, within the Gozo Business Chamber have taken part in this week’s INSULEUR General Assembly.
Joseph Borg in his introduction, thanked the European Economic and Social Committee for welcoming them within its premises. He confirmed the effectiveness of the work being done by INSULEUR and the commitment to continue working for the benefit of the islands within the European Union.
Mr Borg then gave an overview of the activities undertaken during the last semester including the GTI Observatory Summit in Gran Canaria and the general assembly of the CPMR Islands Commission.
An additional eight months has been added to the presidency of INSULEUR for Mr Borg and it will now run until the 31st of March 2024.
In his intervention Michael Galea gave an overview of the current economic situation in Gozo and the challenges it’s facing. He noted that “tourism, construction and real estate are presently the main contributors.”
Mr Galea also highlighted the fact that the economy needs to “diversify in favour of new sectors such as digitalisation, education and research and renewable energy projects.”
He stated that “currently the Gozitan economy is experiencing a number of challenges mainly demographic and brain drain.”
