60% of works are now completed on the Xewkija Multimodal Hub, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri has said.

The Minister was speaking during a visit to the site with Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett.

Minister Camilleri explained that this project, in the area known as Ta’ Xhajma, will consist of a total of 24,000 square metres of which 12,000 square metres will be dedicated to 300 parking spaces.

He explained that the aim of the project is to regenerate the area and transform it into a parking space for vehicles and dedicated spaces for charging electric vehicles and pedelecs.

This centre will also include a terminal building from which 6 electric buses will be operating the park and ride service.

The Minister went on to explain that after the majority of works were were completed, work also began and was completed on the piles, the pile caps and the ground beams on which the parking facility will be built with concrete grass pavers.

Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett said, “with the help of European funds, we continue to invest in projects such as this, which while helping our country reach environmental goals, are improving the quality of people’s lives.”

Minister Clint Camilleri said in addition to parking, this project will include a green roof over the parking area, thereby providing an outdoor recreation facility.

As well as the structural element, rainwater will be collected through a water management system and directed into a large water reservoir.

Minister Clint Camilleri concluded by saying that “all of these elements will make this project one of the first of its kind and we will be launching more green projects planned with European funds that the Government has allocated for Gozo.”

Earlier this year, in reply to a Parliamentary Question by Opposition MP Chris Said, the Gozo Minister said that the Park & Ride is “expected to be operational from the first quarter of 2024.”
