This Chameleon was rescued from Qala, Gozo at the weekend by a volunteer from Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section.
It had been caught by a cat, but luckily there were no serious injuries and after a quick assessment by the volunteer the Chameleon was released back in a safe wild area.
Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section explained that “habitat loss has become a major issue for our local wildlife including Chameleons. They are increasingly being spotted in urban areas and on roads as they struggle to find wild areas to live in.”
Please note, NGO is requesting that the general public not to relocate Chameleons themselves without contacting the wildlife rescue team.
Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section volunteers are able to assess whether relocation is necessary and whether the animal might be sick or injured and need treatment. Chameleons can get very stressed when captured and handled.

Chameleons are a protected species and it is illegal in Malta to keep local wild Chameleons as pets.
Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section volunteers have wildlife handling permits and training as well as equipment in order to rescue these creatures. If anyone spots a Chameleon (or one of the other wild animals that the NGO rescues) injured or in danger, please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.
