Almost €100 million spent on R&D during 2021 - NSOResearch and Development (R&D) expenditure in 2021 amounted to €99.9 million, corresponding to 0.67% of GDP, this was an increase on €13.7 million compared to 2020.

According to the latest data from the National Statistics Office, Basic Research is the major type of R&D expenditure in 2021 and labour costs represented 61.0% to total R&D expenditure.

The highest rate of R&D activity was noted in engineering and technology amounting to 55.2% of total R&D expenditure.

The NSO said that 3,087 employees were engaged in R&D, with 1,799 on a part-time basis.

In 2022, the highest disbursements of Government Budget Allocations for R&D (GBARD) were recorded in the R&D financed from General University Funds for Social Sciences.
