Free vet services to NGOs and the adopt a pet allowance initiatives have been launched by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights. Alicia Bugeja Said.

She said that the first initiative is a continuation of the free veterinary services offered to non-governmental organisations, which aims to help the work of the many volunteers in this sector.

Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said explained that during the last two years the Government has supported sanctuaries and non-governmental organisations by providing free veterinary services, with an investment of around €80,000.

“We all appreciate the work done by many volunteers in the sanctuaries where they are at the forefront to protect the animals and we now announcing an extension of this important service which has been reviewed and the amounts increased. We will be giving €45 for each dog and cat that the associations are taking care of and €180 for each horse,” explained Dr Bugeja Said.

In order to continue to incentivise more people to adopt animals the Government is investing around €30,000 in the form of vouchers and anyone who adopts will be able to make use of them when they need to use veterinary services from one of the establishments or clinics that are registered with the Animal Welfare Department, the Parliamentary Secretary said.
