A life-size sea turtle model created by local sculptor Raphael Mizzi, now takes pride of place on the beach at Ramla l-Hamra, Gozo.

“Sea turtles are awe-inspiring creatures, and I wanted to honour their beauty and importance in our Mediterranean sea through this artwork.”

Raphael said that, “this piece took me 14 hours over two days to complete. It’s made from clay, driftwood, stones, and measures around 1.8m long.”

“I had a wonderful time crafting this sea turtle and the experience of connecting with Gozitans of all ages was truly heartwarming,” he said.

Raphael added that they exchanged stories about turtles, “and I was amazed to see some kids getting inspired and molding their own small turtle sculptures with clay! Art has such a wonderful way of igniting creativity in everyone.”

Raphael added that “while I haven’t encountered them in their natural habitat yet, I hold on to hope for that magical encounter someday, amidst the waves and the setting sun.”

“As we unveil this piece, let’s also remember to cherish and protect our seas and its incredible marine life. It’s vital to preserve this precious environment for future generations to continue admiring its wonders. Together, we can make a positive impact,” he said.

Ramla Bay in Gozo is apopular bay for turtles to nest and in June a nest was discovered by volunteers from Nature Trust – Fee Malta. The nest is now protected and under constant surveillance until hatching starts.
