The Gozo section of Nature Trust – FEE Malta currently have three hedgehogs in rehabilitation in Gozo
There is Francesco, Natalia and Lynn. The NTM Gozo Section explained that all of these hedgehogs are doing well and will be released back in to the wild when they are ready.
Francesco was found in Ghajnsielem, he was extremely dehydrated and underweight. While in rehab he has started to gain some weight and is looking much more round, so he will soon be released.
Natalia was found in Sannat as a young hoglet, she had somehow been separated from her mother so the Gozo volunteers have had to bottle feed her with special hedgehog formula. She is now learning to eat solid foods and growing fast, the team said.
Lynn was found almost drowning in a large water bowl in Xewkija. She was luckily unharmed.
The NTM Gozo Section said that as Lynn is still a hoglet and too small to be in the wild without her mother she will be released once she has grown and can fend for herself.
It explained that hedgehogs are a protected species in Malta and cannot be harmed or kept as pets.
“Our volunteers have wildlife handling permits as well as training and equipment to help these creatures,” NTM Gozo said.
If a member of the public spots a hedgehog, or any of the animals that we rescue, injured or in danger please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.
“A massive thank you always goes to the public who call us when they notice a wild animal in distress, our vets, and our dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers.”
