As from today Local Councils now have the power to request from the Malta Tourism Authority all details regarding owners who are responsible for holiday premises so that they can take measures to ensure a more effective waste management situation in localities where there are holiday premises.
Local residents across Gozo and Malta have complained about the waste being left out on days when there are not collections, particularly in areas where there is holiday accommodation, or indeed just being discarded wherever, be it the gutter or people’s gardens.
New regulations have come into force that will give rise to more effective work between Local Councils, the Malta Tourism Authority and the owners of the holiday premises, the Government has announced.
The Government said that through such information, the Local Council will be able to take measures in various forms, “including educational ones about the national schedule of days and separation of waste etc, as well as measures of enforcement, hand in hand with the competent authorities.
The Ministry for Local Government stated that the amendments “are a clear demonstration that this government is committed to increasingly recognising and improving the national waste management system.”

That photo looks to be Triq Ghajn Qatet in Victoria, if so, those waste bags are not from holiday lets but from local residents and business owners who put them in the middle of the road instead of outside their property, presumably so no one can identify who put them out, killing many of the plants put in when the road was rebuilt!
The only way to check on this sort of thing is discreet cctv to identify the culprits.
Wouldn’t it be enough to place more big bins around the islands? Especially in touristic areas by the sea for instance.
