Heritage Malta free entrance to sites and museums on SaturdayHeritage Malta is celebrating the 20th anniversary since its inception, with free entrance to its sites and museums on Gozo and Malta and an open day at its headquarters in Bighi.

At Bighi, visitors can have a close look at how the agency accomplishes the tasks entrusted to it.

Heritage Malta’s sites and museums – except the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Underground Valletta and sites which are currently closed – will be open for free on Saturday 30th September. Normal opening hours apply, and no pre-booking is required.

Heritage Malta explained that the open day at Bighi headquarters is happening on Sunday, the 1st of October, between 10am and 6pm.

Visitors will be able to meet agency employees from various fields of expertise – including architects, scientists at work in their laboratories, conservators and tradesmen – and understand the crucial role of modern technology in preserving our national cultural heritage.

Events during the day have been planned to suit all tastes and ages. Children will have fun as they learn, through specially designed tours (that need to be pre-booked) and various other activities and attractions throughout the day.

Students and seniors will be able to collect their Heritage Malta passports from Bighi on the day, bookworms may browse through several Heritage Malta publications, and Heritage Malta memberships will be available for purchase. There will be stalls with food and drinks.

To mark its 20th anniversary, Heritage Malta will also be holding a social event at Fort St Elmo for its current and retired employees, in recognition of their contribution to the agency along the years.

The event will include the launch of an exhibition of artistic works by Heritage Malta employees. The exhibition comprises some 25 pieces, from paintings and drawings to jewellery, photography, sculptures, crochet, and cribs, among others.

It will run until the end of the year and the public may visit it as part of the experience at Fort St Elmo.
