New GP service for the elderly offered in the community

Active Ageing and Care in the Community will start offering a doctor’s service for elderly aged over 60 who live in the community, and who have complex health problems.

The details about the new service were announced by the Minister for Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela.

In Gozo one can contact the Elderly Service Centre on 22788238, or visit the offices located at 39, Triq ir-Repubblika, Victoria, Gozo. Information can also be obtained through freephone 153.

Minister Abela explained that health care professionals will be identifying those elderly eligible for this service, including elderly who are not receiving this service from the Department of Primary Care and/or do not benefit from other related services; elderly people who cannot leave the house; elderly people who have various health conditions.

He went on to explain that the community doctor will be working on the cases of the elderly eligible for this service, and through a medical care plan, the elderly will receive care according to their particular needs.

“As a Government we are aware that in the community we have people with complex health problems. Accordingly, this is another service from the range of services that are offered, so that the elderly continue to be helped and continue to live in the community,” concluded Minister Abela.
