Consumer Price Index rises from 111.47 to 112.09

In August 2009, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices went up by 0.6 per cent over the previous month, rising from 111.47 to 112.09. This primarily reflected an increase of 2.8 per cent in the Restaurants and Hotels Index, mainly due to higher prices of accommodation services.
The Food and Non-alcoholic beverages Index went up by 1.1 per cent, mainly due to price increases in vegetables.
An increase in the price of gas caused the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels Index to go up by 1.1 per cent.
The Health Index increased by 0.3 per cent, mainly on account of higher prices of medical equipment.
Seasonal price increases for package holidays underlay an increase of 0.3 per cent in the Recreation and Culture Index.
Higher air fares and car prices brought about an increase of 0.2 per cent in the Transport Index.
The Furniture, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House Index registered an increase of 0.1 per cent, mainly on account of costlier household textiles.
Price increases for served beverages caused the Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco Index to rise by 0.1 per cent.
The Clothing and Footwear Index dropped by 7.8 per cent, mainly on account of seasonal decreases in the prices of garments.
Lower prices for jewellery caused the Miscellaneous Goods and Services Index to decrease by 0.1 per cent.
In July, the twelve-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 3.6 per cent, whereas the annual rate of inflation stood at 1.0 per cent.
