Security in Gozo is threatened, the Nationalist Party said in a statement on Thursday, and following several incidents of violence in the Gozitan streets, residents, businesses and members within the Gozitan Local Councils have voiced their concern.
”The Government, however, remains silent and does not care about anything in the hope that the problem will be swept under the carpet.”
“The problem will not disappear with the situation as it is,” the PN said. “What will happen is probably another tragedy like we have already had.”
“Why is the Government not doing something when the authorities are left with limited resources?” the PN asked.
The Nationalist Party said it has maintained that the Police force should be strengthened by improving their conditions so that they are truly effective in the fight against crime.
It insisted that “we have a demotivated, overworked, overstretched and underpaid Force. We can’t go on like this.”
The agencies that have the duty to enforce the laws should also be strengthened in order to increase discipline everywhere, the PN said.
The PN went on to say that “our Courts should be given resources to work, including by rewriting the Criminal Code so that it starts to make sense in today’s times.”
“Today we are facing a reality where one of the most fundamental human rights, peace of mind, in a safe environment, is also being eaten away,” the PN said. “We need to face this reality so that the right to live in a safe country is restored.”
It stated that “good advice comes from wherever it comes from, the Government should always take it. For the good of Malta.”
The PN statement was signed by Joe Giglio Spokesperson for Home Affairs and Alex Borg Spokesperson for Gozo.
