As previously advised, President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola recent visited the MaltaPost Document Management Centre in Xewkija, Gozo, where she lauded the work of this centre.

This project in Xewkija aims to create productive employment for people with disabilities and today employs over 50 persons with special needs.

Ms Metsola emphasised the need for new projects like that of MaltaPost to be developed at local and European level in order to make jobs more accessible.

MaltaPost’s project is the result of effective collaboration with the Lino Spiteri Foundation and Jobs Plus.

During her visit, Roberta Metsola emphasised that work upholds human dignity, and that MaltaPost’s dedication, together with that of the Lino Spiteri Foundation and Jobs Plus, should be honoured and supported.

“Regardless of one’s abilities or characteristics, everyone has the right to productive work,” Ms Metsola said.

Ms Metsola stressed that different abilities and the requirement for various skills must be taken into account while developing educational systems and training programmes.

President Metsola stated that Malta needs to keep looking into methods on how to utilise European funds in this direction.

According to her, there are specific circumstances in which a person with disability requires further care, for extended periods of time. As a result, special schemes need to be established that recognise such requirements.

President Metsola thanked the employees for their valid work contribution and praised the MaltaPost management team, together with the staff of the Lino Spiteri Foundation and Jobs Plus for their significant social contribution.

She encouraged the creation of other initiatives similar to that of MaltaPost in order to provide more work opportunities for everyone in Malta and Gozo.

The Chairman of MaltaPost, Mr Joseph Said, thanked President Metsola for her visit and stressed that although the company is focused on its commercial role it is also conscious of its responsibility to society as a whole. As a result, MaltaPost intends to extend this project in Malta.
