Ghajnsielem village will soon form part of the ‘School Grannies’ project, benefitting both the elderly and children of the locality, while encouraging interactions between the generations.
This has been made possible following an agreement between the Ghajnsielem Local Council, Ministry for Active Ageing, Ghajnsielem Primary School and Community Police.
The Council said that a call for applications will soon be issued for residents who have retired from work after reaching pensionable age, or those whose family responsibilities have dwindled and want to remain active withing the community so every morning and afternoon they can assist students when they are entering or exiting the school.
During the meeting, Ghajnsielem Mayor Kevin Cauchi, on behalf of the Local Council praised this initiative, which he said, “will help improve the overall situation during school entrance and exist whilst keeping grandparents active.”
The School Grannies project also started in Xewkija earlier this year and has proved a great success.
