€5,279,000 was collected during the 12-hour fundraising marathon L-Istrina – held on Boxing Day at the Sports Complex in Marsa and Independence Square, Gozo.

This was the last one for the Presidency of Dr George Vella and Mrs Vella.

Boxing Day is now synonymous with this annual charity fundraising 12-hour telethon, which last year raised €5,062,415.

The event is held to raise money in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund, to be used for those who are less fortunate and was televised on all channels.
