No major traffic accidents were reported throughout the first night of this year, the Police said on Monday.

During December, Police Officers together with other entities, including Transport Malta, conducted more than 160 road checks all across Malta and Gozo.

Police said that around 4,500 vehicles were stopped and inspected, where more than 600 drivers were fined for violating traffic regulations.

These included drivers caught driving without a valid licence, the use of mobile phones while driving, excessive driving at speed, drivers not wearing a seat belt and vehicles with tinted glass.

The Police added that a number of vehicles were also towed after drivers did not present a valid licence, contraventions were issued on Y Plates vehicles without the related permits and verification was made on residence documents.
