An agreement has been signed between the Government, supermarket owners and food importers regarding stability in food prices, which will result in a decrease of 15% in prices from the 1st of February on 15 categories of “essential food products.”

The Government said that this means a “guarantee that the price of around 400 products will remain stable until the presentation of the next budget.”

Minister for the Economy, Silvio Schembri, explained that following a study carried out on which are the most consumed food products in the country, a list of 15 food categories were selected and from there started a number of meetings with the private sector.

For the owners of small shops that join the scheme there will be a grant of €125 for each month that they remain with the scheme, which can be done by completing an online form

The establishments and products that will be part of this initiative will be able to be recognised by special signs with the Stability logo as above.

The 15 categories are:

Corned beef

Cornflakes

Cream crackers

Fresh/frozen minced/ground beef/pork

Fresh/frozen pork chops

Frozen raw chicken legs

Frozen raw whole chicken

Frozen peas, broccoli, spinach

Black tea

Instant coffee

Tinned tuna in vegetable/soya/sunflower oil (excluding tuna in brine and olive oil)

Vegetable spreads in tubs or foil

Frozen friable French fries

Skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole milk in cartons

Wheat spaghetti and penne
