Mr Wenzu Buttigieg of Sannat celebrates 100th birthdayOn Friday, the 2nd of October, Mr Wenzu Buttigieg, originally from the village of Sannat, celebrated his 100th birthday.

Mr Buttigieg is a widower and was married to the late Maria. They had four children 3 sons and a daughter. He now resides at the elderly division of the Gozo General Hospital where on Friday, H.E. Bishop Emeritus, Nichol Vella Cauchi, led a thanksgiving mass on the occasion of Mr Buttigieg’s birthday.

Present for the mass were Mr Buttigieg’s family, Sannat Local Council Mayor, Mr Philip Vella, together with council member Mr Emanuel Tabone, a representative for the Ministry for Gozo as well as MP Mr Fredrick Azzopardi and MP Dr Justine Carurana. Sannat Vice Rector Dun Anton Mizzi and other priests from Sannat concelebrated mass with the Bishop Emeritus.

Later during the day Dr Toni Abela, Deputy Leader of the Partit Laburista also paid Mr Buttigieg a visit.

Many years ago Mr Buttigieg was a Government employee, with the Public Works Department in Gozo. He was an “Ghannej,” as L-Ghana bil Malti was his hobby. In fact he used to cross over to Malta on the 8th of September, to join other ghannejja at Il- Vitorja Tal Mellieha. He also used to speak some French, because when he was young he spent some time in Algier, France, like many other folks from Sannat.

In the name of the people of Sannat, we wish our friend “ad moltos annos” on this very special day. We are proud and happy that one of our parishioners had the grace of attaining the age of a centenarian

This is just to remind everybody that a special mass celebration will take place this Sunday 20th October at 1030am at our parish of Saint Margaret V.M. Sannat. Main celebrant will be Canon Tarcisio Camilleri, Archpriest.

I would like to wish my grandfather Wenzu Buttigieg all the best for his 100th birthday, what an achievement I was there not long ago in Malta and it was a pleasure to see him doing so well and still healthy at his age.

It’s a pity I couldn’t stay long enough to be there for the celebrations. I would have liked my father to be there as well but at the same time we can say we saw him just before his 100th.

Well done Nannu, I wish that I will live to be a 100 years old.

On behalf of my wife Michelle and sons Jordi and Kobi I would like to congratulate my nannu Wenzu Buttigieg on turning 100 !!!

I have been lucky enough to see Nannu a few times over the years despite living in Melbourne. His cheeky humour was always on show when I met him.

My father Cikku, Wenzu’s son and all my family including my mum Maria, my brothers Joe, Damien and Jeremy wish we could have all been there to celebrate this great achievement with him.

      All our love Nannu
