During 2023, 316,000 emergency calls were made on the number 112 in Malta and Gozo and were answered in an average of three seconds, the Public Service said.
However it noted that, 75% of these calls should not have been made on 112, and enforced the importance that “this number should not be abused. Remember, a phone call can save a life.”
Today, the 11th of February, marks European 112 Day – This same emergency number can be used all across Europe.
A call to this number will be picked up by trained operators, who can speak in the national language of the country the caller is in, and who can deal directly with their emergency, or pass it on to the relevant service in that country.
