Removal of Marsalforn Road trees: Cars and tarmac win over environmental protection – PN

It is clear that in Government policy, “environmental protection is given less priority than cars and tarmac,” the PN said in a statement on Wednesday.
“After the Planning Authority had approved the infrastructure project on the application of the Ministry for Gozo to widen the road from Victoria to Marsalforn – unnecessarily – the Environment and Resources Authority then made a decision in favour of removing or moving more than 200 trees,” said the PN.
The PN insisted that the new trees that will be planted instead of those that cannot be relocated “will not easily replace the positive environmental impact of mature trees.”
“The many speeches on how much importance we should give to the agricultural sector and trees, which are the lungs of the Maltese islands, pale in comparison to the actions with which the Labour Government carries out the policy,” stated the PN.
It stressed that “taking care of agricultural land and environmental greenery should be an absolute priority for the Government of our country.”
The statement was signed by Rebekah Borg, Shadow Minister for the Environment, Joe Giglio Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Capital Projects and Alex Borg Shadow Minister for Gozo.

Insane! and completely unnecessary, the people of Gozo must stop this outrage.
Just resurface the road it’s a mess.
This should be labelled as an environmental crime. There are more important roads to fix rather then this one. Marsalforn road is wide enough, traffic is practically inexistent! This is a completely nonsense project lead by greediness.
I walk that road on a regular basis and the only problem is a minority of drivers who drive recklessly. If the authorities are seriously concerned about the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, they should target these drivers and their careless, selfish behaviour instead of uprooting trees and widening the road, which will merely encourage these drivers to be even more reckless.
