A new book has recently been published for children by Gozitan art teacher Denise Muscat, who is based in Malta – Meta r-ramel sar blu [When the sands became blue].

The book is set around the beautiful Ramla-l-Hamra beach in Gozo, the environment and the creatures that live there and the fauna that grows there

Denise explained that the story is based on a dialogue between an old mother turtle and a younger female turtle. She remembers a beautiful sandy beach, amber coloured, where the sand is soft and delicate. Star shaped sea daffodils bloom in the sand dunes. The sea is a blend of blues, like sapphires and lapislazzuli.

The old mother turtle warns the young one about humans and their behaviour. Then, when the young turtle herself visits the beach to nest, she notices something different.

The book, which is Maltese, is inspired by the loggerhead turtle’s visit at Ramla l-Hamra Bay in Gozo. Denise said that she wrote this book “to create awareness about the delicate balance between nature and human impact.”

The book also has a picture glossary with facts. It is available from all leading bookshops.
