Rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit in Gozo said that they continue to monitor illegal activity such as dumping and burning of waste (SL.549.40/549.63) across the island.

In a statement on Monday, the Rangers stressed that these activities “are continuing with impunity due to the lack of enforcement in the Gozitan countryside.”

The MRU explained that “this specific site in Zebbug, Gozo (as seen in the above photos) lies within the Natura 2000 site of Wied il-Mielah u I-Inhawi tal-Madwar (MT0000037) and our Unit has now reported it to ERA – Environment & Resources Authority for further investigation.”

“Our Rangers will keep a close eye on it and when the offender is seen, the report will be updated with information enough for the Authorities to prosecute,” the MRU said.

The MRU said that again, it wished to “remind the Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri of the meeting which was cancelled and not, as promised, rescheduled.”

It also reminded the Government “that for 2 years, the MRU has now pointed out to you that Gozo has ZERO Environmental Protection Unit Police stationed on the island, giving Environmental criminals 100% impunity.”

The MRU also appealed to the general public for any assistance. “Do you have any information about this case? Please contact ERA (anonymously or not) and refer to case CRM01444/24.”

The Malta Rangers Unit stated that its Rangers, NGO VO/2443, deal with over 300 cases of environmental illegalities – Monthly.
