The Cittadella Centre for Culture and the Arts will host a group of actors in their presentation of the play ‘Doubt’ by John Patrick Stanley. This play won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002.

In majestically simple language it examines the nature of certainty in a situation where there is no factual support. It is compellingly set down and unfolds in a thriller-like fashion. The battle ground is a Catholic school in 1964, in the midst of the century’s most iconic change. The opponents are Sister Aloysius, a feisty, ultra-conservative school principal and Father Flynn, a priest with more modern ideas. The referee is Sister James, a caring and vulnerable teacher. A crucial fourth character with a surprising attitude is the mother of one of the students.

The very topical theme of misconduct within the clergy provides a drama of great moment and sensitivity, but which of the adversaries will you favour after the last sentence is spoken?

Sue Scantlebury plays Sister Aloysius. Sue is a British professional actress who has appeared on the West End stage as well as a multitude of Provincial ones. Stephanie Carbonaro is a Maltese professional actress and television presenter who is well known to local audiences and has played an abundance of major roles over the years. Stephanie plays Sister James. Mariella Cassar, well known to Gozitan audiences, plays Mrs Muller. Rob Ricards, who has done more writing than acting in recent years, plays Father Flynn.

‘Doubt’ runs at the Theatre of the Cittadella Centre for Culture & Arts (Gozo Citadel) on the16th, 17th & 18th of October at 8.00pm. Tickets at €8.00 may be purchased at XT Tigrija Palazz or the SPCA Gozo (who get a percentage) on markthorogood@gmail.com or 21562498.

The intimate theatre space has limited seating, so it might be best to book in advance.

The production is being organised in collaboration with the Gozo Culture Office within the Ministry for Gozo.
