Zminijietna welcomes extension of 'equal pay for equal work'The Left think-tank Organisation Zminijietna has welcomed the Government’s decision to extend the principle of ‘equal pay for equal work’ to the private sector as well.

It said that ”this will lead to workers enjoying the same rights, regardless of gender, work contract or nationality. Observation of this law should be backed by a robust regulatory framework and enforcement.”

“In addition, Zminijietna demanded ”a reform of the labour law in the area of a definite contract and precariousness. Many workers, especially foreigners, are still being subject to poor working conditions based on a six-month job contract. The minimum should be raised to enhance the principle of flexicurity.”

Zminijietna went on to say that “for many years now, the right wing hegemony in the European Union has transformed the labour market from one with decent conditions of employment to one based on precarious job contracts.”

“On the other hand, the left in Europe recognised the need to push forward the concept of flexibility with security. The ETUC introduced a set of criteria to this model,” the organisation said.

Zminijietna concluded by saying that it ”encourages a labour market model, based on these principles of flexicurity; for the promotion of regular and stable jobs, action to promote job security irrelevant from the work contract, strengthening of the economy in order to find work easily, encourage measures for ‘equal pay for equal work,’ and better work-life balance, as well as an increase in trade union representation that will enhance industrial relations and an economy based on decent jobs.”
