Independent MEP candidate Arnold Cassola visited the Malta Society for the Protection and Care of Animals in Floriana on Thursday.

Cassola lauded the MSPCA for its precious work over the past 120 years, educating people to treat animals with respect, while comforting animals that fall victim to inhumane treatment.

During his visit, apart from speaking to those working voluntarily at the centre, Cassola also had the opportunity to meet some of the animals currently resident there.

He remarked that ”whilst important progress has been registered in the field of animal welfare, the many cases of animal maltreatment that come to light prove that there is still a lot to be done in this field. Educational campaigns in schools, which start from the basic principle that animals, like humans, are sentient beings, should continue to be supported.”

He stressed that ”the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals (ETS No. 125) and the European legislation on the welfare of farm animals, should serve as a guiding light in our country”.

A representative of the MSPCA highlighted that fact that ”every animal deserves to live a life free of unnecessary suffering even if we never see it happen ourselves. Humans have taken control of their planet and often their lives. The least we can do is promote legislation that protects pet, wildlife and livestock welfare equally without having it watered down to a ghost of what was proposed when there is the opportunity.”
