Barbie was most popular film screened in Malta and Gozo last yearCinemas in Malta and Gozo projected 385 different titles and registered a total of 594,087 admissions in 2023, the National Statistics Office said today.

There were six cinema establishments with 23 screens in total, two of these were situated in Gozo

The NSO noted that gross box office receipts amounted to €4,508,747.

The most popular film titles screened across the Maltese Islands were ‘Barbie,’ ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ which accounted for 8.8%, 4.7% and an additional 4.7% of total admissions respectively.

The NSO said that Maltese productions, many of which belonged to the short films rather than the feature films category, had 4,884 admissions with a total gross box office of €20,457.

The majority of the films (61.0% of the total) had a running time between 76 to 120 minutes. ‘Fiction (non-Animation)’ type of screenings amounted to 72.5% of all genres shown in cinemas as first-time releases.
