The Gozo Business Chamber said that it is ”extremely concerned about the current situation in the electricity infrastructure which is translating itself into consistent power cuts across Gozo and Malta.”

The Chamber, in a statement on Saturday, highlighted the fact that in Gozo various localities have been hit by power cuts and in some cases the interruption of the water supply, several times this week. This situation has lasted for 16 hours up until this afternoon.’

”Apart from the significant impact this is having on our communities, especially the more vulnerable, such a situation erodes business and investment confidence at such a crucial juncture of the busy tourism season,” the Chamber said.

It stressed that ”this situation is also affecting other sectors such as retail, catering, manufacturing, and the digital sectors, where the consistent power cuts have caused considerable damages, loss of customers, consumables, and working hours, and added costs to sustain the power supply in some cases.”

The Chamber went on to say that ”this situation calls for both urgent solutions but also a longer-term reflection on the infrastructure that is needed to sustain the steep population rise experienced on our islands and the intensification of development in our communities.”

”Within this scenario a regional analysis of the current electricity infrastructure in Gozo is required, analysing vulnerabilities and criticalities in our electricity grid, and taking concrete action. Such a situation is not consonant with the level of development both Malta and Gozo are seeking to achieve,” the Chamber said.
