ERA must make public results of investigation into Hondoq contamination - PNIn a statement on Saturday, the Nationalist Party urged the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) to make public the results of its investigation into the sludge in the sea surrounding Hondoq ir-Rummien beach.

“The ERA must identify the source of the contamination, and establish effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” the PN said.

“The priority of the Nationalist Party is to stop contamination of this kind from the source, to reduce the environmental risks and protect the health of all those who frequent the beach,” it said.

However, it pointed out that the same sentiment does not only apply to Hondoq ir-Rummien, because this is not an isolated case of contamination.

The PN stressed that “the various recent instances of contamination in Maltese waters have escalated public concern, which deserves greater transparency regarding the environmental impact and potential risks.”

The statement was signed by Rebekah Borg Shadow Minister for the Environment and Alex Borg Shadow Minister for Gozo.

Last week the Gozo Tourism Association also urged all the competent authorities “to take the necessary measures, in order to reinstate the popular beach of Hondoq ir- Rummien, freely accessible and available to all, without posing any danger or inconveniences to visitors and bathers.”
