Independent politician Arnold Cassola has written to Commissioner for Environment and Planning, Perit Alan Saliba, requesting an investigation regarding the sanctioning by the Planning Authority of illegal penthouses in Sannat, Gozo.

“As you may know, these penthouses were declared illegal by the highest court of Malta earlier this year.

“The decision to approve the sanctioning of these illegal structures raises serious questions about the integrity and responsibility of the Planning Authority,” said Cassola.

The letter continued, “it is of great concern that a judicial sentence, which clearly stated that these developments are illegal, seems to have been ignored. This not only undermines the rule of law but also sets a dangerous precedent for future developments, potentially degrading public confidence in the planning system.”

Cassola went on to say, “given the gravity of this situation, I urge the serious consideration that your office conducts a thorough investigation into the actions of the Planning Authority in this case. Specifically, I encourage you to examine:

“whether the legal process was followed in the decision-making process; and

“if there was any undue influence or irregularities that could have led to the sanctioning of these illegal structures.”

Cassola stressed to the Commissioner that, “the preservation of our natural and built environment is of great importance, and it is essential that all development activities comply with the existing legal and regulatory framework. The actions of the Planning Authority in this case appear to breach these principles, and it is imperative that accountability is ensured.”
